The Background

With the commitment to sustainable development, Hong Kong leading developer Swire Properties wanted to launch a fun and interactive app that enables users to learn more about the ecology and history of Taikoo Place, Cityplaza and Taikoo Shing neighbourhood, where once the home of Swire’s Taikoo Dockyard and Taikoo Sugar Refinery Compound.

The Challenge

Onion Creative were asked to design an engaging and children-appealing game that can educate users about the biodiversity and heritage of Taikoo area, and to connect users with the neighbourhood and keep them coming back, instead of just making an one-off experience. The app mainly targets the primary school students aged at 8-13 years old, along with primary school teachers and parents as the second audience.

The Approach

We applied the idea of treasure hunt by using real-time GPS location tracking for users to locate different "checkpoints". In order to keep users coming back, a collectable card with information about the ecological or historical aspects of the neighbourhood will be rewarded once they complete a challenge. Players are also allowed to select one of Swire Properties' NGO partners after they complete each successful quest, to which the company will donate HK$10 to make contribution to the society which has made the game more meaningful.

The Result

We have created more than just a digital experience by bringing users to "The Loop" – the Swire sustainable development exhibition centre located in Taikoo Place, where users can continue their learning experience. Along with the donation feature, the app has truly become a platform that connecting the people with the community, as well as a medium for users to contribute to sustainability.
