Lazy consulting listening

In the world of consulting, where insights meet action, and solutions drive change, there"s an unconventional strategy that might just redefine how we understand value and leadership: the power of being "lazy".

At first glance, ‘lazy consulting" might sound counterintuitive. The traditional image of a consultant is someone who"s always a step ahead, ready with a plethora of ideas and solutions. However, what if I told you that sometimes, the most effective form of consulting is to be "lazy"? To clarify, "lazy" here means putting the onus on clients to articulate their thoughts fully, encouraging them to lead the thinking process.

Why Lazy Consulting is a Win for Clients

  1. Encourages Leadership: By encouraging the client to lead the dialogue, we’re not only respecting their expertise and in-depth understanding of their business, but we’re also empowering them. This form of "lazy" consulting fosters a sense of ownership and accountability, essential ingredients for impactful collaboration.
  2. Unveils Deeper Insights: When clients are asked to lead the conversation and lay out all their thoughts, it often brings deeper insights to the surface - thoughts they may have considered too obvious or irrelevant to mention otherwise. These insights can be golden, offering a more comprehensive view that helps in tailoring truly bespoke solutions.
  3. Strengthens Solutions: ‘Lazy" doesn"t mean disengaged. On the contrary, by carefully listening and letting the client articulate their vision and challenges freely, consultants can provide more targeted, impactful advice. This approach fills in the blanks with precision, ensuring that the solutions offered are not just good on paper but work in the real world too.
  4. Builds Trust and Partnership: This approach demonstrates respect for the client"s expertise, fostering a stronger, more genuine partnership. When clients feel heard and seen as the experts of their own business, it builds trust - a fundamental element for any successful consulting engagement.

How to Practice "Lazy" Consulting

  • Ask open-ended questions: Encourage your clients to think deeply and speak freely about their challenges and aspirations.
  • Listen More, Talk Less: Active listening is key. It"s about understanding the unsaid, reading between the lines, and then guiding the client to solutions that resonate.
  • Facilitate, Don"t Dictate: Guide the dialogue through insightful questions rather than leading with solutions. Allow the client to arrive at insights, with you steering the conversation subtly towards productive outcomes.

‘Lazy consulting" isn"t about doing less work; it"s about doing smarter work. It"s a strategy that values depth over breadth, listening over speaking, and empowering over instructing. By adopting this approach, consultants can deliver more detailed, client-centered solutions that resonate more deeply with those they are designed to serve.
